Travel alert - Russian military action in Ukraine

February 24, 2022

Russia began military action against Ukraine today, including airstrikes on Ukrainian military positions near the capital of Kyiv. While ISU does not currently have any travelers in Ukraine, Russia, or Belarus, we continue to work with security partners to monitor the impacts on travelers throughout the region. At this time, the security impact on neighboring countries is limited.

We will continue to monitor the risks for students, faculty and staff who have planned travel to other countries in the region. Travel to neighboring countries -- including Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and Sweden -- should be avoided. Impacts on the airline sector and NATO troop deployments may cause significant disruption to travel, delays, and cancellations. These countries are also preparing to receive refugees and the medical infrastructure is likely to be impacted.

Advice for ISU Travelers:

  • Do NOT travel to Ukraine, Russia, or Belarus.
  • Avoid non-essential travel to Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and Sweden. Travelers in those locations do not need to depart at this time, but should monitor local news.
