Vehicle Claims

University Vehicle Accident Reporting

Accidents must be reported by university drivers, regardless of who was hurt, what property was damaged, where it occurred, or who was responsible when the accident occurs during the course of university business. All Transportation Services vehicles contain an information packet with instructions about what to do in case you are in an accident or you need fuel or repairs. The packet contains complete instructions, insurance information, and forms.

Vehicle Coverage

Iowa State University participates with other Iowa Board of Regents, State of Iowa institutions in the Iowa Regents Motor Vehicle Self-Insurance Program for liability on motor vehicles. The program responds to liability claims for property damage or bodily injury arising from an accident involving University vehicles where the University driver was more than 50% negligent. The Iowa Regents Motor Vehicle Self-Insurance Program includes coverage for comprehensive and collision damage to University vehicles, subject to a $500 deductible per loss. The deductible will be assessed to the department.

Violations and Accidents Required Reporting

Failure to report an accident or incident of damage as required will be considered in assessing fault to a driver and may result in loss of vehicle, restricted use, or assessment of repair costs or insurance deductibles to the department, up to $500.

Passenger Claims

Passengers are not automatically insured for injury in the event of an accident. Passengers may only seek recovery for injury or damages caused by the negligence of a University driver pursuant to the Iowa Tort Claims Act, Iowa Code 669 (1996). Refer all claims or inquiries to the Office of Risk Management.
